Peter Girling FCIM MARLA - Chairman
Peter established Girlings Retirement Rentals in 1990. Prior to this Peter had worked in retirement housing as a Housing Manager with Help the Aged and then as Director of Care Services with McCarthy & Stone and also as a Director of Peverel. He left the army in 1971 and managed hotels in Cornwall and Sussex. Peter is non-executive Chairman of Girlings and a Director of the Places for People Retirement Company. He is a Founder Trustee and Honorary President of SAFE established in 1987, a charity working to assist victims of violence and abuse. He is a former Director & Trustee of the Haig Housing Trust and a Church Warden.
Gillian Girling BSc (Hons) FARLA MIRPM - Chief Executive
Gillian established the foundations of the company with Peter in 1990 and is responsible for managing the company and dealing with the acquisition and disposal of properties for investors. She is a Fellow of ARLA and is a Member of the Institute of Residential Property Management. Prior to setting up Girlings, Gillian worked in the National Health Service for 10 years after graduating from the University of London in Nutrition & Dietetics.
Simon Hamilton BA FCCA FARLA - Finance and Property Director
Simon joined Girlings in 1998 and became Finance Director in 1999. Previously he worked in the City of London after training as an accountant with Coopers & Lybrand. As well as being responsible for finance, tax and accounting for Girlings and its clients, Simon is responsible for property matters across the various Girlings portfolios, including repairs and maintenance. He has achieved ARLA Legal Competency at Level One and Level Two.
Jamie Turnbull BA (Hons) - IT and Tenancy Director
Jamie is a graduate specialising in Business Information Systems. He joined Girlings in 1998 and worked in various departments before he became Executive Manager in January 2009. Jamie was promoted to sit on the Board as an Associate Director in September 2010 and was appointed to full Director with effect 1 August 2012. He has overall responsibility for the IT and Tenancy Administration Departments. Jamie has achieved the ARLA Legal Competency at Level One and the ARLA Leadership and Management Standard.
Chris Phillips - Director
Chris joined the Places for People Group Board in 2006 and was a senior independent director from 2008 before becoming Chairman in 2010. He became a Director at Girlings in November 2014. Chris was Managing Director of PB Securities, the UK subsidiary of Prudential Bache, for three years before joining Lombard Odier as the MD of its London broking business. He then joined Colliers International and, after heading its residential consultancy business, became the first Managing Director of Colliers Capital (UK) Ltd. Chris has chaired a number of companies listed in the UK and Germany, and is currently non-executive Chairman of Hadleigh Waymoth Ltd and London & Newcastle Ltd, a leading mixed-use, London-based property development company.
David Cowans - Director
David is Group Chief Executive of Places for People. David has 30 years’ experience of housing, urban regeneration, mixed tenure and mixed use development, property management and financial management, leading strategic change in large and small organisations. He became a Director at Girlings in November 2014. David has an MBA from Birmingham University and is a Chartered Director of the Institute of Directors, a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, a Chartered Member of the Institute of Housing, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the Institute of Residential Property Management.
